American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull Terrier is known as the dog with a passion, power and unending willingness. It has a brick-like head and a neck that is thickly muscled and well defined. It is muscular, agile and considered to be very strong with respect to its size. The eyes of this dog are round. Its other common names include: Pit bull, Pit Terrier, Yankee Terrier (the Northern name), Old family dog (the Irish name), St. Francis Terriers and Rebel Terrier (southern name).

The American Pit Bull Terrier results from a cross breed between the Old English Bulldogs and the Old English Terriers. For this reason, these dogs possess a combination of the strength & athleticism of the bull dogs and the gameness of the terriers.

They were bred in the UK, where they developed into the direct ancestors of the Pit Bull Terrier. They were used in bloodsports such as bull baiting, bear baiting and cock fighting. These “sports” were banned in 1835, but since dogfights were cheaper and easier to organize and conceal from the law, some turned to pitting their dogs against each other instead.

In the 20th century, Pit bulls were used for hunting, driving livestock, and as family companions. They are very friendly towards people and has been used as therapy dogs. But even today, there are some unfortunate Pit Bulls that still is being used for wicked purposes.

The Pit Bull Terriers were renamed “St. Francis Terriers” by the “San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” in 1996 with a goal of increasing the number of people that were adopting them. The program was dropped when cats were reported to have been killed by a number of newly adopted Pit Bull Terriers.

Coat and Color

The coat is composed of short, thick, and shiny hair. The colors range from black, blue, fawn, white, red, brindle, tan, brown or gray. Most of the dogs that don’t have a white colored coat have white stripes.

According to the UKC, the essential characteristics of the Pit Bull Terrier include confidence, strength, zest for life and the strong contentment to please. They are known to have a great passion for young children and people in general.

Due to their powerful physique and the fact that they have a certain level of dog aggression, they require a master that can carefully train them to socialize and be obedient.

Since they are some of the known canine climbers, good fencing is a must for every owner of this breed of dogs. The Pit Bull is not good for use as a guard dog due to its friendliness, even with strangers.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is generally healthy breed. Nonetheless, some are reported to be prone to congenital-heart disease, hereditary-cataracts, allergies to grass, hip dysplasia and congenital heart disease.
