History

The American Pit Bull Terrier results from a cross breed between the Old English Bulldogs and the Old English Terriers. For this reason, these dogs possess a combination of the strength & athleticism of the bull dogs and the gameness of the terriers.

They were bred in the UK, where they developed into the direct ancestors of the Pit Bull Terrier. They were used in bloodsports such as bull baiting, bear baiting and cock fighting. These “sports” were banned in 1835, but since dogfights were cheaper and easier to organize and conceal from the law, some turned to pitting their dogs against each other instead.

In the 20th century, Pit bulls were used for hunting, driving livestock, and as family companions. They are very friendly towards people and has been used as therapy dogs. But even today, there are some unfortunate Pit Bulls that still is being used for wicked purposes.

The Pit Bull Terriers were renamed “St. Francis Terriers” by the “San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” in 1996 with a goal of increasing the number of people that were adopting them. The program was dropped when cats were reported to have been killed by a number of newly adopted Pit Bull Terriers.

The coat is composed of short, thick, and shiny hair. The colors range from black, blue, fawn, white, red, brindle, tan, brown or gray. Most of the dogs that don’t have a white colored coat have white stripes.
