The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world and is named for the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, head shapes and coats.
The history of the Chihuahua is fueled with speculations, myths and legends and there really is a lot of theories surrounding the origin of the breed.
The most common, and generally accepted theory, is that they are descendants from a the Techichi, a dog favored by the Toltec civilization in ancient Mexico. There is no records of the dog prior to the 9th century, and this knowledge is based on artwork and artifacts that have been found during archaeological excavations in Mexico.

While some dog breeds have a signature coat color, others, like the Chihuahua don’t. They can way more diverse and can appear in a an almost endless variety of colors, markings and patterns.
