The Golden Retrievers have their roots in Scottish Highlands dated back to 1800’s. They were predominantly used for hunting. This breed was developed by Sir Tweedmouth. His goal was to create a breed suitable for Scottish climate, terrain and games plated. He crossed Yellow Retriever with Tweed Water Spaniel found on his estate.

Golden Retriever Size

Males Retrievers are 58-61 cm (23-24 inches) tall, while females are 55-57 cm (21.5-22.5 inches) tall. Male retrievers general weight between 29-34 kilos (65-75 pounds) and females about 27-32 kilos (60-70 pounds).

Golden Retriever Personality

A sweet and calm nature is how this breed is most often characterized. The Golden Retriever is usually bred to work with people. They are a people’s dog and always eager to please their owner.

This breed must be well-trained and well-raised to make the most of their heritage and they need early socialization and exposure to different people, sounds, experiences and sights.

Golden Retrievers have dense and water-repellent outer coat. Some coats may be wavy, while other can have straight ones. They have heavy feathering on the back of the thighs, chest, and tail. Golden Retrievers come in many shades, from cream to gold, ranging from light gold to dark gold.

Golden Retriever Grooming

The smooth and medium-haired double coat breed is very easy to groom. You can comb and brush their hair regularly. Pay particular attention to their dense undercoat. It is recommended to use dry shampoo regularly, but complete bathe should be given only when necessary.

Golden Retrievers are prone to mast cell tumors and cancers. Other common problems include hip dysplasia, heart problems, congenital eye defects and Von Willebrand’s disease. Skin allergies are also very common in Golden Retrievers and some may even require regular attention of veterinary. Retrievers should not be overfed as they tend to gain weight and become obese with time.
